川柳は、日本人の誰もが知っている文芸です。全国で川柳の公募コンテストも行われ、マスメディアにも多く登場します。

本書、「Senryu」は、私の川柳のドラマ性に着目したアメリカ人の文学博士、ジョセフ・ヒックス氏による現代川柳の英訳本です。
私の川柳は、ドラマチック川柳です。脚本家でもある私は、五・七・五、十七音字で、人間ドラマを創ることを目指しています。
人生ドラマ、恋愛ドラマ、ホームドラマ、そしてサスペンスドラマ…
ジョセフ・ヒックス氏は、これらドラマの要素は世界共通であると、昌善川柳を評価し、英訳し世界に発信することに挑戦してくれました。
俳句の英訳本は、多々ありますが、現代川柳の英訳本の出版は、初めてではないかと思います。
また、日本人にとって楽しく英語が学べる教材。外国人にとっては楽しく日本語が学べる教材ともなります。
Senryu is a literary art form known to all Japanese people. Public senryu contests are held and Senryu poetry is often featured in mass media.
There are two main types of Senryu poems.
The first is the satirical and humorous 5-7-5 style using other people and society as its subject matter or “target”. This type is called traditional Senryu. The other type is modern Senryu. This is a highly literary and poetic type of Senryu in which the main character is oneself and rich human drama can be created in 5-7-5 syllables.
The characteristic of modern Senryu is that in the 5-7-5 syllables, one can see into one’s own ego and wavering heart. Joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure, especially “anger” and “sorrow” in one’s heart, are the themes of modern Senryu. They dramatically express love, family, life, and the authors’ own sad hearts.
Since it is a literary art, naturally we also employ the use of fiction.
This book, “Senryu,” is an English translation of my contemporary Senryu by Joseph Hicks, an American academic psychologist/educator who has translated the feeling and dramatic nature of my Senryu.
I like to emphasize that I create word pictures with a dramatic style of Senryu. As a screenwriter, I aim to create human drama with only 17 syllables in the 5-7-5 style.
Such dramas can be life dramas, romantic dramas, home dramas, and suspense dramas…
Joseph appreciated that these elements of drama are universal, and he challenged me to have the Shozen Senryu translated into English and share them with the world.
There are many books on haiku translated into English, but I believe this is the first time that a bilingual English translation of authentic modern Japanese Senryu has been published.
For Japanese people, it is a fun and meaningful way to learn English. For our international friends, it is also a fun and meaningful way to learn Japanese.
